YESTERDAY (ROOM 221)

Paul found the whole process of writing ‘Yesterday’ very surreal.  It has been well documented that he simply woke up with the song in his head.  It was as if he had dreamt it all.  Initially he had the whole melody, but the song began with a working title of Scrambled Eggs.  Quickly he wrote the lyrics and ‘Yesterday’ was complete.  Believing that it was all too familiar ,he thought he must have stolen it from somebody, either consciously or subconsciously.  However, when he played it to friends and family, two things emerged, one it was universally agreed it was a great song and secondly, no, nobody had ever heard of it before!!  To this day Paul is at a loss to fully explain how he came to write it.  In his song writing master classes that he gives at LIPA, he simply says that it was “intuitive and was as if I had plucked it out of thin air”.  The rules of song writing, he believes, are that there are no rules!  ‘Yesterday’ is probably the song Paul will be most remembered by, just as ‘Imagine’ has become John’s definitive song in the eyes of the public.  ‘Yesterday’ appeared on the Help! album but its greater significance was probably that although a Beatles classic, neither John, Ringo nor George were actually on the record.  Paul’s own acoustic guitar was accompanied by a string quartet arranged by George Martin.  Within three years this would soon become the norm as the four Beatles were not always present on a recording. ‘Yesterday’ became the most covered song of all time and Paul himself believes it to be his best ever.
