SHEA STADIUM (ROOM 214)
The Beatles touched down at JFK on August 13th 1965 to begin their third USA tour in little over 18 months. Their second film ‘Help!’ had premiered two days previously in New York and the new album ‘Help!’ was released on the day of their arrival. America’s welcome had all the usual ingredients, hysteria, tens of thousands of screaming fans, huge police security operations, wall-to-wall journalists, and general mayhem. However, two days later it seemed that the ante had risen again. 56,000 screaming fans crowded into Shea Stadium, the home of the New York Mets baseball team, breaking the world record for a gig by anybody! This was probably the most famous gig in all of popular music history. Thankfully the scenes were filmed by Brian Epstein’s new film division (Subafilms) and it was later released as a documentary, complete with their tremendous live performance, as “The Beatles at Shea Stadium”. The police insisted the band were flown by helicopter from Manhattan to Queens, thus ensuring a spectacular entrance for The Beatles… whilst also preventing gridlock in the streets and tunnels by blocked by Beatles-fans.
