JULIAN (ROOM 207)
JULIAN (ROOM 207)
John married Cynthia Powell on August 23rd 1962. Cynthia was heavily pregnant and John “did the right thing”. Paul was the best man. John later recalled his relationship with Cynthia and the resulting birth of Julian was as a “as a result of a bottle of whiskey on a Saturday night”. This was as insulting as it was inaccurate. John had in fact begun his relationship with Cynthia “a posh girl from The Wirral” in late 1958, thus Julian was the culmination of a four-year steady relationship. Whether Cynthia and John would have ever married if she had not become pregnant is open to debate , but nevertheless, John’s later viscous and bitter one liner ,does not reflect the true extent of their relationship.
Julian was born on April 8th 1963, but it was not until three days later that John was able to get time off from his hectic schedule as a Beatle, to return to Liverpool to see his son. John’s Aunt Mimi was furious that the pregnancy occurred and generally gave Cynthia a hard time, who was forced to live with Aunt Mimi whilst John was touring. John was very much an absent father and years later lamented the fact and ensured that he didn’t make the same mistake with the birth of his second son, Sean, to Yoko Ono in 1975.
For a long time, Julian’s birth and John’s marriage were kept from the fans in case it had an adverse effect on the bands popularity. Cynthia and Julia kept a low profile in the background, which was ultimately broken by an acrimonious divorce and John’s ensuing relationship with Yoko. Julian, who much later had his own successful music career, never ever really got close to his father. Julian’s torment was immortalised in song by Paul in ‘Hey Jude’.
