ED SULLIVAN 2 (ROOM 205)

The Beatles played gigs in Washington and Carnegie Hall in between their two performances for Ed Sullivan. Their second performance on February 16th was to be recorded live in Miami at the luxury beachside Hotel, The Deauville. The Beatles took the opportunity to catch the Florida sun and photo opportunities were held at the beach, in the swimming pool and on a boat.  The show itself reaffirmed their popularity as for the second week running over 70,000,000 Americans tuned in.  This time the band performed “She Loves You”, “This Boy”, “I Wanna Hold Your Hand”, “From Me To You”, “All My Loving” and “I Saw Her Standing There”.  In the audience were two heavy weight boxing champions, the legendary Joe Louis and Sonny Liston.  However a couple of days later, on their supposed day off, the Fab Four asked to meet Cassius Clay (later to be know as Mohammed Ali) who was in training for a rematch with Sonny Liston. The training camp quickly degenerated into a huge publicity stunt for both camps, as the group and the boxer playfully hammed it up for the cameras, footage which was shown all over the world. Clay picked Ringo up as if he was a rag doll and the fun and games continued much to the delight of the media.    The American press just couldn’t get enough of them and it wasn’t long before The Beatles had the top 5 singles in the American Billboard charts and twelve singles in the Top 100, a feat that surely will never be equalled.
