SUMMER OF LOVE (Room 322)

Sgt Pepper became the soundtrack of ‘The Summer of Love’ in 1967. Everything seemed to spring into vibrant colorful life. Post war austerity seemed a million miles away as brown and grays were replaced with yellow, oranges and reds. The young generation were beginning to flex their muscles and they saw a new alternative way forward; a life of color, flowers, peace, love, and drugs (but mainly drugs!). The Beatles had embraced psychedelic, mind-altering drugs such as LSD and their lyrics reflected their experience. The counter culture was centered in San Francisco and Amsterdam, traditionally areas of liberal fee thinking. The Beatles were invited to perform at The Monterey Pop Festival in California by one of the organizers, Derek Taylor who had been their publicity agent. Although they declined they insisted that Derek should sign up Jimi Hendrix for the event. Hitherto virtually unknown, he was a friend of The Beatles and living in London. Paul also came up with ideas for the Festival’s program. The same weekend that the festival took place Paul admitted in the press that they had taken drugs creating a furore.  At the end of the month ‘The Beatles’ performed ‘All You Need Is Love’ live to the first global audience. The pace was manic, attitudes were changing and the young were reacting en-masse to the Vietnam War. Once again The Beatles were at the forefront, but were they leading the way were The Beatles just a reflection of what was already happening? There are arguments for both, but one thing was certain, the world was rapidly changing.
