PENNY LANE (Room 314)

‘Penny Lane’ was coupled with ‘Strawberry Fields Forever’ as a double A side single and like ‘Strawberry Fields’, ‘Penny Lane’ was a real place in Liverpool and was originally supposed to be on the Sgt Pepper album. Sir George Martin, The Beatles producer, deemed that Penny Lane / Strawberry Fields Forever was the greatest record they ever made. Paul used his own knowledge of Penny Lane with his ability to create functional character to paint an optimistic and happy picture of life, beneath the blue suburban skies.  Penny Lane was indeed suburban Liverpool, and it has become a huge tourist attraction for Beatles fans that want to see the real bank, the shelter in the middle of the roundabout and the barbers shop. You can also see the fire station. However, none of these are actually in Penny Lane itself! Penny Lane is not only a thoroughfare; it is seen as an area of Liverpool, as well. So all of the places Paul sung about are in the Penny Lane area. Incidentally, the original lyrics to John’s “In My Life” described a bus journey from Penny Lane to the City Centre and mentioned all the places that you would see on the journey. However John radically reworked the song into the classic we know today. If he had kept all of the original lyrics Liverpool would have had even more famous Beatle related places to see and enjoy.
