MAGICAL MYSTERY TOUR / THE FOOL (Room 324)

Like most of the projects at this time the idea was Paul’s. John was pre-occupied with his crumbling marriage and his fascination with Yoko Ono, whilst Paul was embracing new ideas and seemed to have limitless creative energy. In Britain, the music was released on 27th November 1967 as a double EP with a gatefold sleeve… another first. Meanwhile, in the USA, it was released as an album by merely adding The Beatles singles from 1967 to the EP. America, it seemed was determined to extract every commercial opportunity from The Beatles’ catalogue. Sgt Pepper had dominated the album charts in the USA for the latter part of 1967 and here was a new album! However, when played back to back with Pepper it is undeniable that the music is of a particular time and place. The British EP was the soundtrack to the new Beatles movie, which was a made for TV extravaganza due to be aired on Boxing Day (December 26th 1967). The title track was a Paul classic and the recording for the Magical Mystery Tour had actually been completed before the release of Pepper. Paul’s prolific [output] included ‘Your Mother Should Know’ and ‘Fool On The Hill’. George’s contribution was ‘Blue Jay Way’ and the group composition ‘Flying’ was a rare instrumental.  However it would be John’s song ‘I Am The Walrus’ which perhaps stole the limelight, a wonderful, hard rocking whimsical piece that is one of THE great moments in Beatle history.
