THE QUARRYMEN (Room 106)
THE QUARRYMEN (Room 106)
John bought his first guitar, a Gallotone Champion for £17 and formed a group in 1957 with his schoolmates. They originally called themselves “The Black Jacks” but then decided to rename the band “The Quarrymen” as they attended Quarry Bank School. John was always the leader. It was his band. Initially John was joined by Rod Davis on banjo, Pete Shotton on washboard, Eric Griffiths on guitar, Len Gary on tea chest and Colin Hanton on drums. The line up proved to be both temporary and flexible as one by one John’s friends found themselves replaced by better musicians. First John invited Paul to join the group and Paul would later introduce his friend George Harrison to John and he too would join John’s band. Paul and Colin (the drummer) had an argument, which left The Quarrymen drummer-less for a long time, thus hampering their progress. Ultimately the band went through a number of personnel and name changes before they found a new permanent drummer called Pete Best.
