Paul McCartney, who was already an MBE, became a Knight of the Realm on 11th March 1997. Where do you begin to evaluate a life and a career that has delivered so much? His contribution to the cultural history of our country and beyond, as a performer and writer… as a Beatle, the leader of Wings, and as a solo performer is almost immeasurable. However, Paul has also written and published poetry, composed the ”Liverpool Oratorio”, and classical pieces such as “Standing Stone“, whilst also being an accomplished painter. He has used his stature as one of the world’s most famous people to campaign for causes dear to his heart:
With first wife Linda he promoted vegetarianism as a healthy alternative and the couple were activists in the protection of animals. This has led to campaigns against the wearing of furs, animal testing, the ethical treatment of animals (PETA) and Friends of The Earth to name but a few. After the death of Linda, Paul continued to campaign with second wife, Heather, for animal rights and backed her campaign for ‘No More Landmines’. Paul’s profile has given him access to Presidents and Prime Ministers and he has always utilized this privileged position to highlight the plight of others. He has lent his considerable weight to projects such as Live Aid, Zeebrugge Ferry Disaster, Kampuchea, Seal Culling, and Third World Debt.
He has performed in Red Square, at The Superbowl, and at Buckingham Palace. His achievements as an Oscar Winner, multi -Grammy Award winner, and the most successful musician and composer in the history of popular music (according to The Guinness Book of Records) are perhaps the motive for the naming of a new planet (McCartney) by E. Bowell on 11th July 1983. However, for us in Liverpool, his legacy has helped to create a substantial tourist industry that creates jobs and wealth for his hometown, which after years of decline that Paul witnessed first hand, after the ravages of the Second World War, has helped to give the City a new direction in recent years. Of course, when tourists arrive they quickly discover that Liverpool has so much more to offer than just The Beatles, a sentiment echoed repeatedly by Paul himself, but undeniably his achievements have helped to create a legacy that is akin to that which Shakespeare left for Stratford Upon Avon.
