RINGO STARR SUITE (Room 402)
Richard Starkey, or Ringo as he became affectionately known, was the first born of the four Beatles and the last one to join the band replacing Pete Best in 1962.
He was the first to walk out on the group during the recording of the “White Album” as he felt “unloved “ by the others. He was also the last Beatle to play on any Beatle recording session , as he overdubbed his drum parts for Producer Phil Spector for the “Let It Be” album. He had at least one vocal track on every Beatle album and was lead vocalist on the hit single “Yellow Submarine”.
He initially befriended The Beatles in Hamburg where he was playing with fellow Liverpudlian band ‘Rory Storm and the Hurricanes’ . He had been a barman on the Mersey ferries and had worked at Butlins Holiday Camp but dreamt of making it big. His opportunity came when he was offered the job replacing Pete, which he found impossible to turn down, especially as the band had just signed a record deal with Parlophone. Pete’s loss was definitely Ringo’s gain. Within eighteen months the band had conquered the USA and Ringo was the most popular Beatle in many quarters. Everybody it seemed loved his down to earth attitude and his deadpan humour. However , Ringo brought a lot more to the party than that, he was the glue that kept the band together musically and at times personally. When the band eventually split up ,he was the only one that continued a strong personal relationship with all of the others and he was to regularly appear on the solo albums of Paul George and John. Indeed his “Ringo”album was the only one that would ever again feature all four Beatles.
Ringo was to carve out a new career in films and he appeared in “2000 Motels”
“Candy” “That’ll Be The Day” “Magic Christian” and “Caveman”. It was on the set of the latter that he first met Barbara Bach who he would later marry.
Somewhat surprisingly he gained a new audience as narrator of children’s programmes “Thomas the Tank” and its USA spin off “ Shining Time Station”. His albums post Beatles initially sold well and he had two US Billboard number 1 singles with “It Don’t Come Easy” and “You’re Sixteen” . As the late 70’s gave way to punk and the Eighties to New Wave , Ringo’s recording career waned but the royalties from The Beatles keep pouring in which enables him to keep homes all over the world, notably in the UK , Monaco and The USA. With the relentless encouragement of Barbara , Ringo at the start of the nineties was able to declare that he had beaten his addiction to both alcohol and drugs. With so much downtime on his hands, Ringo decided he needed something to keep him focused and occupied and to that end he formed his own All Starr Band, which has at various times featured musicians such as Joe Walsh , Todd Rundgren, Peter Frampton, Jack Bruce Billy Preston and John Entwistle. Ostensibly ,the All Starr Band is a moveable feast ,that enables Ringo to go back on the road and play live with his friends whenever the fancy takes him. It also in his own words “keeps him out of trouble”. Ringo has toured many times in the nineties and throughout the first part of the new century and long may it continue ,thus allowing us all to see a real live Beatle strutting his stuff.
