LINDA (Room 407)

Linda Eastman was quite simply the love of Paul’s life and it was purported that apart from his brief incarceration in a Tokyo prison, Paul and Linda never spent a night apart from their marriage in March 1969 until her premature death from cancer in April 1998. Paul first met Linda at “The Bag of Nails” club in London in May 1967. His long-term relationship with Jane Asher had petered out in July 1968 and very soon he and Linda had become an item. Like Yoko, she had attended the exclusive Sarah Lawrence School in New York and she had been married before. It was often believed that she was an heiress from the Eastman-Kodak family but that was an urban myth. However, like Yoko, she had been from a very privileged and wealthy background, as her father was a very prominent lawyer. She became a photographer with “The Town and Country Magazine” in the early sixties and developed into one of the best rock photographers of the era, working for ”Rolling Stone Magazine,” photographing The Doors, The Rolling Stones and Jimi Hendrix to name but three. She was later  voted the USA’s Female Photographer of The Year and her work has been exhibited globally including an exhibition at the prestigious Victoria and Albert Museum. When The Beatles split up, Linda performed alongside Paul as a member of the hugely successful band, Wings. Like Yoko she was an activist and encouraged Paul to become a vegetarian. Linda worked tirelessly for animal rights most notably with PETA (People For The Ethical Treatment of Animals), Lynx (the anti fur lobby) and Friends of The Earth, companies that Paul and his family support to this day. Again, in common with Yoko, Linda was initially blamed for the beak up of the band but as time went on the public gradually warmed to the real Linda and her death in 1998 was mourned the world over. Paul adopted Linda’s first daughter, Heather and they had three children of their own, Mary (like her Mother a renowned photographer) Stella (a designer of International repute) and James who amongst other things played guitar on his Dad’s ‘Flaming Pie’ album. All in a truly remarkable much loved and much missed woman.
